SPRING FLING A BIG HIT

Jennifer Rizkalla

Our first annual Spring Fling was a terrific success. We had a great turn-out of more than 60 folks throughout the day. For those that attended, we want to thank you for bringing out your best side dishes and desserts to share. The judges for the pie contest were happy to take on a role that was well worth it. 1st place went to Nancy Holt for her Buttermilk Pecan pie and 2nd place went to Christine Kent for her chocolate cream pie. COVNA provided Austin-favorite Rudy's BBQ. A special thanks to Nelisa and Dean Heddin for providing the ultimate backyard setting with bocce ball, a bounce house, and swing sets for the young residents and comfortable seating on their new deck for the rest of us. Our goal is to create a stronger network here in the neighborhood to continue to grow a safer place for residents and help address concerns for the neighborhood as they arise. If you have not joined COVNA, please consider doing so at this time. The cost is only ten dollars. Print out a membership at COVNA.org/membership or contact Hal Ferguson, our treasurer, at 282-0601.

We want to give a very special thanks to the sponsors of this event. A huge thanks to the following neighbors; Jessica DeLeon, Hannah Wolniewitz, and Dean Heddin.

COWAN CORNER

Congratulations to Mrs. Tracy Graham for winning the elementary teacher of the year award! How cool is that. Castlewood can be proud that Cowan is doing such an amazing job or our kids and the neighborhood.

As the 2011-2012 school year comes to a close we all need to be extra watchful for the young ones riding their bikes and playing ball outside during the day. We have all gotten used to the neighborhood streets quiet through the day with all the young ones in school but with summer just around the corner we are sure to see kids running around.

WATER RESTRICTIONS

Stage 2 Watering Restrictions Still in Effect for Austin Water Customers

Austin Water wants to remind you that Stage 2 Watering Restrictions are still in effect for Austin Water customers. The combined levels of Lakes Buchannan and Travis are less than half full. Even though the recent rains have lessened the effects of the drought and added more water to the lakes, Lake Travis is 29 feet below its normal for May and Lake Buchanan is 16 feet below normal for this time of year.

To ensure that both residential and commercial customers follow restrictions, Austin Water staff is continuing enforcement. Violations of mandatory watering restrictions will result in an official warning followed by a citation if the violation is not corrected. Citations will be issued in Municipal Court with fines set during Stage 2 at $475.
Austin entered Stage 2 Water Restrictions in September of last year, when the Lower Colorado River Authority requested mandatory water restrictions of its wholesale customers. For more information on water conservation visit WaterWiseAustin.org.

To find out the block where each incident occurred you can access the police department’s crime report website at www.ci.austin.tx.us/GIS/crimeviewer/CrimeReportSearch.html. After you open this web page, click on the box that says Address Radius Search. Click on Geographic Location Search. The box will now say Neighborhood. Click on the box below the heading Neighborhood Name. Scroll down to find Castlewood-Oak Valley Neighborhood Assn. and click on it. Choose the beginning date and ending date for your search. A list of crimes and incidents will appear with our neighborhood association boundary outlined. When you click on any listing, the map will show where that crime occurred and the street(s) and block number(s) will be displayed below the map. You can enlarge the map so street names appear with the well-disguised zoom tool at the upper left corner of the map. You will have to do this for each listing you click on.

Vitex agnus-castus, also called Vitex, Chaste Tree, Chasteberry, Abraham's Balm was used as anti-libido medicine by monks to aid their attempts to remain chaste.
According to medieval legend, monks chewed on the leaves of chasteberry trees in order to help them maintain their vows of celibacy.
While it's now clear that the herb does not affect sex drive, extracts from the fruit may have some therapeutic effects on conditions related to the female reproductive system.
Chasteberry trees (actually small shrubs found in tropical climates) produce flowers and berries that can be dried and used medicinally.
