VOLUNTEERS FOR OFFICES SPEAK

Just over a year ago, my wife, Sarah and I happened to drive through Castlewood Forest in the midst of our home buying experience.  We were instantly drawn to the quaintness of the neighborhood and decided to change our focus and hope to get lucky in the booming Austin real estate market.  The first week in our home we were welcomed by several of our neighbors; Sue brought us fresh baked cookies; Craig provided his help; Joe offered his tools; and Xan brought us lunch.  This welcome was warmer than we ever would have expected.  We genuinely feel like we've found our own little oasis in South Austin and look forward to growing our family here.

We have been in the neighborhood for just over a year now and are looking to get more involved in our community.  I'm interested in serving as an officer for the neighborhood association in order to make a difference and continue the legacy of John Karabaic, one of the founding members of COVNA whose address we now inhabit.  I look forward to the opportunity to meet more of the wonderful families who make up our great neighborhood.

Paco Bertsch

My wife, Xan, and I moved into Castlewood Forest in 2008.  While house hunting we were immediately attracted to the neighborhood where we found tall trees, larger lots, wide roads and a great location - simply put, Castlewood is a rare find.  We purchased the house across the street from John Karabaic.  I listened to quite a few stories before he passed.  I heard about how he and wife met and their whirlwind relationship.  I heard a couple war stories, about his church and I also learned about COVNA.  I learned from John, a past COVNA president, how COVNA was founded, and some of the zoning and traffic battles fought.

I was inspired; however, at that time I was not ready for the commitment.  This week we celebrated our daughter's first birthday.  With a new daughter my priorities have definitely changed and I now desire an active role in looking out for the neighborhood's interests, meeting more of our neighbors and just being generally more involved.  I look forward to this experience.

Thanks, Matt

MAYORAL RUNOFF ELECTION

Early voting starts December 1st and runs through December 12th.

Election day is December 16th.

Your vote means more in these "small elections."  The last presidential election drew 60% of this precinct's registered voters.  This year's election saw 40% voting.  I would not be surprised to see only 15 - 20% vote in the mayoral runoff.  Remember, a democracy is more true the larger the percentage of the population that vote.
